When you are at the beach in Rio, you might notice some people stand up, grab a soccer ball and within a few minutes a big circle is formed.
They are playing the most traditional beach sport in the city.- the "Altinho".
The "Altinho" is a game played barefoot in the sand by the sea, which brings together boys, girls, adults and children. What makes it so much fun is that there is competition between the players but with a cooperative spirit.
The most interesting aspect of this game is that there are almost no rules - no set number of players, but just like soccer, you may not use your hands. The goal is simply to pass the ball to one another without dropping it, keeping it always on "the top" - hence the origin of the name. To keep it in the air, use your head, legs, thighs and chest and be creative as possible. It's practice at busy beaches such as Ipanema Beach is only allowed in late afternoons, so as not to bother the swimmers.
Many tourists are impressed with the player's skills so then get motivated to engage in the circle. The Altinho beach soccer has become fashionable among locals and tourists, but still quite unknown in other regions of the country and the world, since it is a typical Carioca invention.
Not only is this a great way to interact with others and make new friends, the Altinho also makes you exercise your motor coordination, joint mobility, reflexes and virtually every muscle in your body.
I recommend using sunscreen lotion to get a nice, safe tan while playing! And don't forget to drink lots of water!
