Why Clays Make Perfect Masks, Skincare Gift, Family Bonding Activity

by Valeria Cole |

Clay has been used for skincare and medicinal purposes for centuries - even as far back as ancient Rome. We have talked about the wonders of Brazilian kaolin clays here on the blog before, as the best type of clay for beauty purposes because it’s less drying, softer, has more anti-aging benefits for the skin than the popular bentonite clay. While there are a lot of great uses for clay, it makes an excellent base for a facial mask.

One of the most powerful capabilities of a clay mask is its detoxifying properties. With environmental conditions as they are, particularly in cities where air pollution is status-quo, it’s even more important to protect your skin from toxins, environmental pollutants and stress. Clay makes the perfect detoxifying mask because of the science of how this natural material works… When activated by water or liquid, the clay binds to heavy metals and other environmental pollutants, drawing them out of your skin and washing them down the drain when you rinse the mask away!

Not only do clay masks help to remove waste and impurities from your skin, the gentle exfoliation will remove dead skin cells, and combined with Brazilian clay’s effectiveness at reducing oiliness, the clay mask helps prevent acne and blemishes from developing.

Clays are also soothing and healing, correcting imbalances in the skin including inflammation, toxicity, and bacterial imbalances. Certain clays, such as the Brazilian Kaolin red clay also offer great anti-aging benefits, increasing skin elasticity with firming effects, while enhancing your circulation and stimulating the skin’s ability to produce collagen and elastin. Kaolin clay also has emulsifying properties, meaning that it is lightweight and ideal for sensitive skin as well as normal skin types.

Some of the other excellent benefits of clays for facial masks include:

  • Effective healing treatment for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis
  • Cleanses and shrinks pores
  • Oxygenates the skin cells to rejuvenate skin tissue, resulting in smoother, softer and healthy-looking (and feeling!) skin
  • Regulates the production of sebum (helps prevent blackheads, oily skin and acne from developing)
  • Rich with nourishing minerals such as calcium, potassium, silica, sodium, magnesium and iron

Our RAW skincare line includes three powerfully effective and 100% pure, Brazilian kaolin clays. The majority of clays offered in the market today use fillers such as bentonite and other ingredients to reduce cost of production of offering a 100% pure kaolin clay product. You can choose from Green for blemish prone skin, Rose for sensitive skin or Red for mature skin so that you can customize your mask based on your skin concerns. These kaolin clays are the closest to skin with regard to pH, even better than French kaolin clays.
